Recently Spas of America had the pleasure to sit down with Shane Bird, Spa Director of the award-winning Skaná, The Spa at Turning Stone Resort’s in Verona, New York.
Who are you?
I’m the Director of Spa Operations for Turning Stone Resort. I have been in the spa industry for 16 years and a massage therapist for 19 years. I love every aspect of the spa industry and really enjoy making a difference in the lives of my guests and staff!
First job in the industry?
In the wellness industry my first job was running my own business as the massage therapist for the University of Utah. My first spa job was at a ski resort in Park City, Utah as a part time massage therapist.
Why do you love your job?
I have found a lot of joy in giving guests a memorable experience that has the potential to change their lives. I enjoy seeing guests leave the spa and almost hug the staff as they return to the real world. As a director and former therapist I love being able to provide a work environment that feels like “home” where providers can practice their art and feel safe doing so.
What is the best thing about where you live?
4 Seasons!! I spent years in the Southwest and am so excited for 4 seasons. Central New York rivals anywhere I have lived for its beauty and amazing seasons!
How do you integrate wellness into your life?
I have found that wellness is a state of mind that can produce physical, mental, and spiritual changes. I integrate it by focusing on key factors no matter what role I am filling…Happiness, Relationships, and Integrity.
What’s the best advice you’ve given or received?
“2 words…Yes Dear.” – given to me by my dad the morning of my wedding. (We are celebrating 15 years this year)
Where was your favorite spa experience?
Canyon Ranch Lenox, Massachusetts. The setting is amazing and the staff were over the top!
What spa in the world would you like to visit?
Spa Montage Laguna Beach…or any spa in Paris.
What is next for Skaná, The Spa at Turning Stone Resort?
The next step in Skana’s evolution is to dive deeper into the Oneida culture and bring cultural touch points into different aspects of the guest’s experience.
Why is taking time for spa and wellness important?
Taking ANY time for yourself to focus on wellness is important! It just so happens that spas are geared to assist you in that process. We need to unhook, disconnect, unplug, and just get away from the world. Spas do that and more. Getting a service, taking a class, or just sitting is steam can reconnect you with your body and quiet your mind. It’s essential for true healthy living.
